    Hi, can I leave out the 100k resistor under the potentiometer? Doesn't fet cause problems? It would be nice if I could set the voltage from zero, I have an irfp460 which is good up to 500 volts. Thanks!

      The MOSFET isn’t the problem. The issue is with the actual pot having the full voltage across it. If you have a pot rated for that high a voltage, then there should be no problem.

    I wonder why SONY didn't use the AN612 as the first mixer and also in the FM front end and you could just use crystal filters and lose a lot of the IF transformers and possibly simplify the main circuit board.

    I got a little confused when you were peaking the IF coils by maximising the speaker output while frequency modulating the signal generator's 10.7 MHz output. I guess that could only work as shown if the IF coupling at the ECC85 is such that the induced signal is only just above the noise floor (c.f. your 2V) as with stronger signals I'd have expected a well aligned ratio detector to provide an audio output proportional only to the frequency deviation, not the signal strength. But maybe I'm missing something? It wouldn't be the first time. 🤣

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew 4 дня назад

      I always do the alignment at fairly low levels. If you go higher, the limiting characteristic should kick I. And make no difference to the audio output amplitude (unless, as you mentioned, you increase the deviation of the modulation).

    • @werner.x
      @werner.x 4 дня назад

      I did understand it in the way, that FM modulation is at it's peak at 10.7Mhz, if you set the sweep oscillator the way he did. So, the output should peak at 10,7 as well. Or did i misunderstand something?

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew 4 дня назад

      No, it doesn’t peak at 10.7, but rather deviates from 10.7 with the modulation. The power of the signal should be the same whether it’s at 10.7MHz or at 10.65MHz as a result of signal deviated by 50kHz below the center. The peak in the response is a characteristic of the filter alignment only, which should theoretically be flat at the top between 10.625MHz and 10.775MHz to allow for the regulatory maximum of 75kHz deviation.

    I guess the negative voltage level and then AM rejection is probably the easiest way to do it and as you've demonstrated using a sweep generator and looking at the shape of the response curve can be a bit time consuming for not much if any advantage in many cases. It's nice to play around though and see the different methods.

    Hi Manuel, I wondered if you encountered any Hot Chassis issues with this set, I have an 819 which has the same mains input set up and there is a capacitor between the on off switch and the chassis. If you use a non-polarised mains connector, which they all were at the time of manufacture, you can get 220 volts on the chassis - any thoughts? Great job by the way! Paul :-)

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew 5 дней назад

      If the radio has a power transformer (a real transformer, and not an auto transformer 😊), there should be no hot chassis issues. The cap is only there to eliminate noise, but can create a hot chassis if it shorts out. That caps should be replaced with a proper safety cap of the same value. Safety caps fail open, so no shorting to chassis will occur.

      The cleanup is part of the routine that I actually find very relaxing 😊 I read a description recently about a different type of detector, and the author said, “if you can’t understand the theory, look at it as you would an IC”. Made a lot of sense 😊

    Technical question, I have a Sony CRF-5100, the FM band is shifted forward, for example 99.9 appears at approximately 101. And sometimes some FM appears on the air band between 108 and 109. Do you know if it is something normal on these radios? Is it easy to adjust? Another issue is that sometimes on FM the light turns on and other times it doesn't.

      You probably need to do an RF alignment of the FM. The manual should have instructions in that regard.

      function!!! thank you!!! What I couldn't do is get the light to turn on when it tunes.

      It turned out pretty good. The red light on the dial sometimes comes on, sometimes it doesn't. I don't know if the signal level is reception or do I have to touch something? What I do know is that the stations are practically where they should be.

    Nice. I've been busy renovating a summer home here in the Catskills of NY for a good year so my radio projects have been on hold. None the less I do have the front end of a regenerative receiver off the dream board & on a piece of MDF board. Next but still on the dream board is a direct conversion receiver. I had mucked about, a year or more ago, with what claimed to be a mini whip, but in the end I assembled a 40/20 meter inverted V style fan dipole that works quite well for local traffic which is all that interests my QRP appetite in radios. I added a loop on ground to see if it lived up to hype & its still in place so its not horrible. It actually is about two S meter values quieter, but there is an over all signal loss too. On the other hand I tried a small magnetic loop transmit/receive antenna by using 4 inch aluminum clothes dryer tube for the main loop. This antenna is interesting. Its 4 feet square with a 23 inch square of copper pipe as the inner loop. Once you find the magic spot on the capacitor it becomes very usable for both receive & transmit. Its most efficient at around 80% on 20 meters, but is useful at 40 meters too. It has down sides but was fun to see a bunch of plumbing parts take on being a useful antenna & given a station within a couple hundred miles the darn thing does an excellent job at providing a bearing to the station.

      I went through my antenna experimentation phase and it was absolute hell 😊 I finally settled on the miniwhip as it works best for me (receive only). It also adapts well to the roof of my apartment building as the other owners don’t see it as an eyesore. I’ll probably try a loop someday, but for now … I’ll leave well enough alone 😊

      @@electronicsoldandnew I suspect the mini whip I purchased on Ebay already preassembled was defective or did not match the actual unit designed by the European fella. I'd like to try it again some day with an actual functioning device, but here in the country I have no real need to be discreet, but I must confess the darn LOG does quite well & if the transformer used is sufficient I can't see why one can't use it for local Nvis rag chewing. I used the 60 footer or 15 foot per side square and 14 gage wire that disappeared in a couple weeks. If I was ambitious I'd swap it out for the larger loop that is effective on 80 meters & I'd bet if big enough even lower can be achieved.

    Maybe you can make a separate battery pack module that is always being charged. You could have several voltages going out of the back of the module to feed all the modules as well as a jacks on the front if you needed a quick bench supply for testing. You’ve developed a very cool bench system. Well done!! 🙂👍🏻

    Could there be any problem with using another mosfet capable of 700v? What about 2w pot and 1n4148 If voltage is higher from transformer I have on hand?

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew 9 дней назад

      The mosfet will be fine as long as you heatsink it. The 2W pot is good, as it will handle the voltage better than the smaller pots. The 1N4148 I find a little fragile. Use a 1N4007 instead. It’s more robust.

      Probably, but it’s best to check the cutoff voltage and adjust the resistor as needed. The higher the resistor value, the lower the current limit.

    Well done, as always. I would have liked to see the difference between direct connection of the MiniWhip and going through your un-un (or rather common-mode rejection transformer, because that's what it actually is), especially on long and medium wave. Maybe you could add this in a future video.

      Ok. Noise is the issue, because some noise comes in as common mode noise on the signal and ground lines. This noise is sometimes more audible in the direct connection. The isolation transformer clears some of it up.

    Nice! On another topic, and it's not something I ppersonally need, has anyone ever built a simple 3 kHz (plus possibly an additional 5 kHz) high Q tuned circuit filter plus a bit of amplification feeding into an AC millivolt meter? Why? I'm thinking a cheap and cheerful way to minimize THD during FM ratio detector alignment when the front end is fed with 1kHz FM audio. It doesn't have to be super accurate so long as you can see and minimize the 3rd (plus possibly 5th) harmonic. Or am I talking balderdash? 🤣

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew 9 дней назад

      I may do that, want to check if noise is an issue first, because sometimes with the miniwhip the ground actually adds noise, rather than reducing it.
